Concerning fire safety, flame retardancy is codified at a national and at a European level in a highly regulated manner. The reaction to fire is the representation of a material as input to a fire (combustibility, flammability), defined by the Decree of 21 November 2002.

There are strict flame retardant regulations on the use of textile fabrics in institutions. You can view the details of these regulations on the Securofeu website.

The French Classification

In France, there is a 5-category ranking that defines materials reactions to fire :

  • M0 : incombustible
  • M1 : combustible (non-flammable)
  • M2 : combustible (very low flammability)
  • M3 : combustible (moderate flammability)
  • M4 : combustible (good flammability)
  • NC : non-classified

The European Classification

The European classification (Euroclasses) is defined in the European Norm EN 13501-1. It is a 5 category requirement ranking: A1, A2, B, C, D, E, F (F corresponds to NC of the M Ranking).

This classification also includes two other criterias:

fume opacity (quantity and speed), noted "s" for smoke

  • s1: weak quantity/slow speed
  • s2: moderate quantity/speed
  • s3: haute high quantity/speed

droplets and burning debris noted "d" for droplets

  • d0: no debris
  • d1: no debris thus combustion last no longer than 10 seconds
  • d2: neither d0 nor d1

The IMO norm concerns fire reactiviy in the maritime sector. It applies to all recreational boats and merchant ships.
